Last week, Huawei introduced a new model of the "trifold" Mate XT2 in China. A global launch of this smartphone is not expected, but many resellers in Europe are already offering the device for substantial amounts of money.

The Mate XT2 has a modified design compared to Huawei's earlier three-section smartphones, which folded both inward and outward, similar to the letter Z. The new model uses a U-shaped (or G-shaped) mechanism that folds inward twice, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold. As a result, there is an external display with a diagonal of approximately 6.5 inches, which, when unfolded, transforms into an internal screen measuring 10.2 inches.

In China, prices start at 19,999 yuan (approximately 2560 euros) for the model with 16/256 GB of memory and go up to 24,999 yuan (approximately 3200 euros) for the version with 1 TB of memory and privacy protection. More expensive configurations, including the model with 2 TB of memory and a stylus, cost around 30,000 yuan (approximately 3880 euros).

Some retailers have already started offering the "trifold" for purchase, reports Gizmochina. For example, Trinity Electronics (Hong Kong) and AverageDad (UAE/UK) are already offering the "trifold". The model with 12/256 GB of memory costs around 3626 euros from Trinity and 3685 euros from AverageDad.

The 512 GB version costs around 3845-3865 euros, and the 1 TB models (with and without a protective screen) vary from approximately 4065 to over 5000 euros, depending on the seller and configuration. None of the sellers currently offer the top-of-the-line 2 TB version.

As noted by Gizmochina, these import prices for the Huawei Mate XT2 are significantly higher than those for Apple's iPhone Duo, which starts at $1999 in the US and around 2300 euros in Germany. Even the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, released in the US for $2899 without taxes, is still noticeably cheaper than the prices for Huawei devices on the gray market.

In addition to the high cost, there are also practical issues: the Mate XT2 lacks eSIM, does not support Android Auto or Wear OS, and the language selection may be limited. As with other recent Huawei models, Google Mobile Services are not available, so accessing the Play Store will require workarounds. Those wishing to purchase the smartphone will also have to accept the risks associated with warranty and support, characteristic of gray market devices.
