Can the duty‑free import quota for electric vehicles in Belarus be changed? In a broadcast on the STV channel, Sergey Khudoeshko, chairman of the Board of the Association for the Development of Electric Transport “BETA”, said, as reported by BELTA.

“We understood that the quota would end already in early summer, and unfortunately it ended on July 24 for legal entities and September 5 for individuals. We approached all possible authorities that could influence this issue: the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the relevant ministries – the Ministry of Industry – because we understand that, on one hand, the quota is a restrictive measure and support for domestic producers. But on the other hand, the number of electric vehicles on the Belarusian market is insufficient for developing the structure, insufficient to fulfill the state program, so the quota is very much needed,” said Sergey Khudoeshko.

The decision on quotas is made by the Eurasian Economic Commission. The chairman of the Board of the Association for the Development of Electric Transport “BETA” noted that in July Kyrgyzstan and Armenia had approached the EEC Council with a request to increase the duty‑free import quota for electric vehicles. “We understood that if Belarus also raised this issue at the upcoming meeting, which took place in the first decade of August, everything would work out. We approached it with even greater initiative, with a larger flurry of letters to the state authorities. We were heard,” noted Sergey Khudoeshko, adding that at the EEC Council meeting in Kyrgyzstan an additional quota for the fourth quarter of the year was requested. “But for some reason, apparently another decision was taken. Maybe for now. We still hope that at the upcoming meeting on October 2 in Minsk a positive decision will be made. Because this is truly very important for our citizens.”

According to Sergey Khudoeshko, obtaining an additional quota for the remainder of 2026 for duty‑free import of electric cars is quite realistic, given the experience of other countries.
