On September 22 in Gomel region, a traditional "No Car Day" event will take place.

As noted by the Gomel Regional Inspectorate of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, the goal of the campaign is to draw attention to air pollution problems, popularize eco-friendly modes of transport, and create comfortable, safe conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

Motorists are invited to give up using fuel-consuming vehicles for at least one day. The experience of other countries has shown that solutions to this problem without involving the public are impossible.

Despite measures taken to reduce the harmful impact of transportation on the environment, the problem of atmospheric air pollution from mobile sources (vehicles) remains acute. Vehicle emissions are among anthropogenic factors contributing to environmental pollution. Their composition includes pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrocarbons, sulfur dioxide, soot, benzene, which harm the environment.

According to statistical data for 2025, approximately 31 percent of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere in Gomel region come from vehicles. In total across Gomel region, emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere from mobile sources in 2025 amounted to 43.1 thousand tons, including: sulfur dioxide – 0.3 thousand tons, carbon monoxide – 26.4 thousand tons, nitrogen dioxide – 12.5 thousand tons, hydrocarbons – 3.3 thousand tons, soot – 0.6 thousand tons.

The transport park in the Gomel region is constantly being updated. For example, OJSC "Gomeloblavtotrans" acquired 72 Euro-5 class buses in 2025 and 52 new trolleybuses in 2026, with plans to acquire 98 buses and 15 trolleybuses in 2026.

The Gomel Regional Inspectorate of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection offers residents of Gomel and the Gomel region at least one day to give up using a car, preferring walking, cycling, or using public transport.

As part of the campaign, several thematic events will take place. At n.p. Chenki on September 22 at 10:30, the opening of an eco-trope on the territory of the educational-scientific base "Chenki" of Gomel State University named after F. Skorina will be held.

Then at 11:00, a bike race along the route is planned: starting from the educational-scientific base "Chenki" of Gomel State University (start) – the section of highway H-4091 to the "Machine Building" sanatorium (finish).

Thematic bike races will also take place in the Braganino, Yelyskoye, Zhlobin, Kormyan, Loiev, Mozyr, October, Rechitsa, Svetlogorsk, and Checherk districts.

Of course, it is impossible to completely abandon cars under modern conditions, and holding a one-day campaign cannot eliminate all problems caused by motor transport on the environment and people.

Nevertheless, the campaign is a good reason to convey to every person that they have the possibility of making choices to preserve a favorable environment.
