In the future, U.S. data centers will consume more natural gas than Germany and Japan combined. According to a BloombergNEF report, such facilities could use up to 96,277,278 cubic meters per day: this is almost twice the previous forecasts.

In recent months, Meta, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon announced plans to build new natural‑gas power plants that will bypass the centralized grid. By 2035, such projects will consume up to 96,277,278 cubic meters of electricity per day. That is roughly the same amount that all data centers consume today.

According to expert forecasts, by the middle of the next decade, data centers connected to the grid will drive additional natural‑gas consumption by the energy sector of 424,752,698 cubic meters per day. This is five times the demand in all other sectors connected to the grid.

Analysts estimate that the additional gas consumption by data centers could result in roughly one million tonnes of extra greenhouse‑gas emissions per day.
