Bulgaria has suspended part of sanctions against Russia

hotimsk September 3, 2026 10:14 The government of Bulgaria has once again granted a temporary lifting of part of the sanctions for the supply of original components from Russia for the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant,RIA Novosti reports.

The decree notes that since a significant part of the NPP systems and equipment is of Russian origin, some contracts for the supply of products necessary for the reliable and safe operation of the power units must be concluded with Russian contractors.

"Thanks to this exception, the Kozloduy NPP will be able to import iron and steel products from Russia, listed in the appendix to today's decision. They are necessary for the execution of the current contract for the operation of the NPP," the government press center reported. The previous suspension of sanctions for the purchase of necessary equipment was formalized at the beginning of June.

Bulgaria's only nuclear power plant, Kozloduy, was built with active participation of the USSR and commissioned in 1974. It is one of the largest in Eastern Europe, but in 2006 Bulgaria was forced to shut down the first four units of this plant, which housed VVER-440 reactors, as part of fulfilling the requirements for joining the European Union.

The fifth and sixth units, built by the Soviet Union, with VVER-1000 reactors with an installed electrical capacity of one thousand megawatts each, remain in operation at the plant.
