Zero VAT and fast charging: what drives demand for electric cars in Belarus

Since the beginning of the year, Belarus has registered more than 29,000 electric cars. The capital leads in the number of “green plates” on the roads.

Buyers are attracted by affordability and state incentives: zero VAT, a reduced disposal fee, and duty‑free import within quotas. Thus, the “green” automotive market is expanding, along with the charging‑station infrastructure.

Sergey Khudoeshko, chairman of the Board of the Association for the Development of Electric Transport “BETA”: “The current plan is to build stations of 120 kW and above; accordingly, the charging speed becomes lower, but a greater number of cars can be processed in a given time. In a day, instead of 8, 25 could be charged. I’m speaking very hypothetically right now. In an hour, 3 cars could be charged instead of 1. Thus, eliminating the need to use 120‑ or 180‑kW stations will reduce the stress on our consumers’ nerves and load the stations for electricity sales, making it a more effectively invested investment.”

In total, the country has more than 73,000 electric vehicles, serviced by over 2,500 charging stations, 80 % of which are fast. Plans are to increase capacity. This has largely been made possible by the efficient operation of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant.
