In the Gomel region there are only four agricultural enterprises, one of which is a farmer’s farm that breeds the Aberdeen Angus breed of large beef cattle. Among them is JSC “Aga‑Lysakivichi.” Our correspondent visited the commercial farm “Brynyov,” where today 890 elite “Shorthorns” are registered, and learned why they do not build barns for them, why cows are given “artificial blood,” and how the same famous marbled meat is produced.
High‑class beef breeding is a niche that is complex but very promising, says the director of JSC “Aga‑Lysakivichi,” Yuri Kastyronak: “The decision to bring a foreign breed to Petrykivskaya land was a bold and strategic move by the farm’s management. In our case, it is work for the future and a direct impact on the farm’s economy. The commercial farm “Brynyov” is a special source of pride for us. We bet on elite genetics and did not anticipate. This is not just meat production; it is the creation of a highly liquid premium‑class product. Our goal is to show that in Belarusian Polesia one can successfully raise world‑class marbled beef, which will be demanded both domestically and abroad.”
The commercial farm “Brynyov” breaks stereotypes: we haven’t seen a typical cattle farm with long rows of stalls and the smell of hay. The local residents – tall, black as tar, as well as richly reddish bulls and cows of the Aberdeen Angus breed – greet us in the fresh air. The breed came to us from harsh Scotland, so the Belarusian climate is a real resort for the animals. We are greeted by brigade leader Tatyana Martynkevich.
According to the specialist, the main “feature” of keeping these animals is maximum naturalness. There are simply no stalls in the usual sense. Even in the harsh frosts, the pens are open to the sky, hiding from the wind in light shelters with three walls and a roof. Tatyana Ivanovna begins her account of the livestock with great enthusiasm: – Many come and are surprised: how can it be, the street is minus, and the cows don’t even go under a roof. In fact, for Angus, the worst is not frost but humidity and drafts. Therefore, three walls and densely packed straw are entirely enough for their comfort. The only exception is a special calf barn where we keep mothers with newborn babies in the first months of life until they grow stronger. In general, meat animal husbandry compared to dairy production requires fewer labor resources and less stringent technological details in housing and
For that the day-to-day medical life of the farm was arranged, veterinarian Alena Zankevich (in photo) became quite familiar with this unique stock after just two and a half years. – The character of these animals is calm but proud, – notes Alena Uladzimaruna with a smile. – When you go on your daily round, you must be careful, especially if you're near a neighboring cow. In her own words, the rural institute simply finds it pitiful – for its child, the mother stands watchful. Even caregivers accept this with great caution in the first weeks after birth. – According to classic technology, calves stay with their mothers until six months. However, at TF "Brynov" we extended this term to four months. Our cows are fairly healthy and quickly gain weight, which makes this period completely sufficient. The best monthly slaughter weight is one kilogram 450 grams, – remarks the correspondent, adding: – If we harvest young animals early, conscientious farmers reproduce more quickly and become physically ready for new growth. Thanks to some of these cows, our herds receive double coverage even twice a year. As a result, more than 100% of our cattle reach slaughter.
To maintain breed purity and avoid "marble-like" conditions, specialists are very strict about genetics. Almost half of the herd resembles those from Western countries with no inbreeding whatsoever. The cow currently raised on pastures in the Nyda Zhytkivka district is naturally calved without intervention. For next year, the farm plan includes 100% artificial insemination. Regarding medicinal aspects, according to information from the veterinary service of the farm, aberdziny (cattle) stand out with strong natural immunity: in the treatment plan, they require minimum procedures because diseases barely affect them. For our region, TF "Brynov" is truly a point of growth and an example of how innovative approaches and foreign genetics are successfully taking off on Belarusian soil under the supervision of meat science specialists.
