Alexander Serafimovich Yakobson, an outstanding statesman of the Republic of Belarus who made an invaluable contribution to the formation and development of our region, and an honorary citizen of the Gomel region, passed away at the age of 76.

A. S. Yakobson was born in Gomel. In 1973, he graduated from the Belarusian Institute of Railway Transport Engineers. He began his career at a construction trust in the Arctic region of Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. He served in the ranks of the Soviet Army. Afterwards, for 10 years, he worked in various positions at Gomelpromstroy.

Since 1985, he worked in party and state bodies: instructor of the construction department of the Gomel Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus, first secretary of the Svetlogorsk District Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus, in 1986–1996 – chairman of the executive committee of the Svetlogorsk City Council of People's Deputies, Svetlogorsk City Executive Committee, until 2001 – first deputy chairman of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee, chairman of the Gomel City Executive Committee. From 2001 to 2010, A. S. Yakobson was chairman of the Gomel Regional Executive Committee.

From 2010 to 2014, Alexander Serafimovich headed the State Control Committee of the Republic of Belarus. In 2014–2017, he was an aide to the President of the Republic of Belarus – chief inspector for the city of Minsk.

A. S. Yakobson was elected a deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, and a member of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the third and fourth convocations.

The passing of Alexander Serafimovich Yakobson is a deep, irreparable loss for all of us. A legendary man has left us, whose name is forever inscribed in golden letters in the history of the Gomel region. A professional of the highest caliber, a wise politician and a caring leader, he devoted decades to constructive work for the benefit of his native land, earning the sincere respect of colleagues and the recognition of the residents of the Gomel region.

Heading the Gomel Regional Executive Committee, Alexander Serafimovich proved himself a far-sighted and strategically minded leader. He paid close attention to all sectors of the economy. Under his caring leadership and personal control, industrial flagships developed dynamically, the construction sector was modernized, and the efficiency of the agro-industrial complex increased.

Caring for people always remained the main priority of A. S. Yakobson's work. The entire social sphere of the region received a qualitative boost, including healthcare, education, culture, and sports. It was during this period that the most important landmark projects were successfully implemented in the Gomel region, which radically transformed the appearance of the region's cities and districts, strengthening its economic security and authority at the republican level. A special milestone of this large-scale work was the revival of the region's cultural heritage: it was on the initiative of Alexander Serafimovich that a large-scale restoration was carried out, thanks to which the main historical and tourist pearl of the Polesie region shone again – the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble.

The Gomel Regional Executive Committee and the Regional Council of Deputies mourn the death of YAKOBSON Alexander Serafimovich and express their deep condolences to his family and friends.

Fate gave this man a bright life filled with good deeds. The bright memory of Alexander Serafimovich will always live in our hearts.
