Meta is renewing its efforts to popularize virtual reality. The tech giant has announced the Meta VR Glasses, its latest development in the VR market. Unlike, say, the Apple Vision Pro, these glasses are far more compact and lightweight, and the many announced features for entertainment and work should attract buyers.

“This is a real breakthrough!” Mark Zuckerberg exclaimed on stage while presenting the Meta VR Glasses. According to him, the company has managed to create a new type of VR device that delivers the same “magical sense of presence and immersion using high-resolution displays and passthrough images of the surrounding world, in a form factor that for the first time is that of glasses.”

Meta claims this gadget is five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3 and looks far more like ordinary glasses than the bulky headsets the company has released before. The frame is made of a magnesium alloy, and the glasses run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processor. They connect to a compute unit that also serves as the battery — users can simply slip it into a pocket to use the glasses on the go.

The glasses are primarily intended for entertainment. The micro-OLED panels built into the lenses provide, according to Meta, a 5K Infinite Display with a density of 37 pixels per degree, as well as support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

However, perhaps one of the most unique features of these glasses is that Meta positions them as a great way to enjoy films shot in IMAX format, notes TechCrunch. The glasses also support 3D content, including films in which the user's physical space is integrated into the viewing experience.

Meta VR Glasses can also be used for work, according to the manufacturer — any space can be turned into your own personal virtual office with an unlimited number of screens, the company says.

Of course, the glasses will also have Meta AI built in — the proprietary automated virtual assistant from Zuckerberg's company. Users will be able to talk to the glasses and automate various tasks using voice commands. For example, Meta says you will be able to start watching a movie simply by asking the glasses to do so. Other ways to give commands include hand gestures.

The device will go on sale in spring 2027 at a starting price of $1,299.99.
