How to choose waterproof laminate for the kitchen, hallway, and other rooms

When renovating rooms with high humidity, many people plan to buy water-resistant laminate in Minsk, hoping to get a beautiful floor covering with the practicality of tile. However, a designation like Water Resistant or Aqua in the name alone is not enough. It is important to find out exactly how the manufacturer protects the core and locking joints, how long contact with water is permitted, and whether the warranty covers use in the kitchen or bathroom.

How a water-resistant option differs from a regular one

Classic laminate flooring has a wood-fiber core that is sensitive to prolonged exposure to water. Special series use denser moisture-resistant HDF boards, protected joints, and hydrophobic surface treatment. For example, EGGER Aqua+ technology combines a special carrier board and a protected locking joint, and individual collections are claimed to be resistant to water exposure for up to 72 hours.

Quick-Step uses HydroSeal coating, which protects not only the surface but also the area of the joints between panels. Pergo also seals the top layer and bevels and provides separate warranty conditions for rooms where contact with liquid is possible.

Therefore, when comparing, you should look not at the advertising name but at the technical characteristics of a specific collection.

Where such flooring is especially useful

Increased moisture resistance is relevant where household spills or wet cleaning regularly occur. These zones include:

  • kitchen
  • entryway
  • corridor near the entrance
  • room next to a balcony or terrace
  • separate utility areas
  • bathroom, if the manufacturer explicitly permits such installation.

Some series are indeed permitted for kitchens and bathrooms, but installation conditions may include mandatory sealing of expansion joints and junctions. This is expressly provided, for example, in Pergo's warranty requirements for wet rooms.

You should not automatically assume that any moisture-resistant flooring is suitable for a shower area or a room with a floor drain. Manufacturers may exclude saunas, showers, and other areas with constant or intense water exposure.

Which characteristics to check first

Before purchasing, it is useful to study the technical data sheet. The main attention should be paid to several parameters:

  • The declared water resistance time.
  • The type of carrier board.
  • Protection of the locking joint.
  • Warranty conditions for wet rooms.
  • Usage class.
  • Panel thickness.
  • Compatibility with underfloor heating.

If a manufacturer claims a specific 24, 48, or 72 hours of resistance, you need to read under what conditions this result was achieved. For example, EGGER for its Aqua+ range specifies 72-hour protection thanks to a combination of a special core and lock.

How to choose a load class

Moisture resistance does not replace wear resistance. A floor may withstand accidental spills well, but may not be sufficiently designed for heavy foot traffic.

For an apartment, class 32 or 33 is most often considered. The former suits most living rooms, while the latter provides a greater margin for hallways, kitchens, and other actively used areas. Both options are found in moisture-resistant series; for example, the technical specifications of Aqua+ provide for use class 32 and compliance with EN 13329.

The choice should be matched to the actual load, rather than aiming for the maximum rating in every room.

Does thickness matter

Thickness affects the rigidity of the plank, the feel underfoot, and the floor height requirements. For homes, panels of about 8–10 mm are common. However, greater thickness by itself does not make the flooring more water-resistant.

Much more important is the quality of the HDF core and the treatment of the joints. Therefore, two collections of the same thickness can differ noticeably in their behavior when spilled on.

Before purchasing, you should also consider:

  • the height of door leaves
  • the transition to tile or another flooring
  • the thickness of the underlay
  • the presence of underfloor heating
  • the permissible level of surface elevation.

Pay attention to locks and bevels

The most vulnerable area of a laminate floor is the joint. If water penetrates between the planks, the core can swell. That is why manufacturers of water-resistant series pay special attention to the lock profile and edge protection. With Quick-Step HydroSeal, the water-repellent treatment extends to the surface and joints, and with Pergo AquaSafe — including the bevels.

The presence of a bevel does not automatically mean lower resistance. What matters is whether it is protected by the technology of the specific collection.

Choose a design to match the interior

After the technical parameters, you can move on to the decor. Light wood shades work well for a small kitchen: they visually lighten the space. Medium oak tones are versatile and go with most facades. Dark options create a striking contrast, but dust and small marks are usually more visible on them.

When choosing, it is useful to consider:

  • the direction of natural light
  • the shade of doors and furniture
  • the color of kitchen fronts
  • the size of the room
  • the nature of the wood grain pattern.

A large, wide plank is better showcased in a spacious interior, while a calmer pattern works well in compact spaces.

Don't forget about subfloor preparation

Even a water-resistant collection won't compensate for poor installation. The subfloor must be level, dry, and solid. Before installation, the manufacturer's requirements regarding height variations, underlayment, and expansion gaps must be followed.

If the flooring is installed in a high-humidity area, the following may also be required:

  • Vapor barrier
  • Perimeter sealing
  • Special sealing cord
  • Waterproof sealant around walls and doorways

Such requirements are directly included in the instructions of certain manufacturers to maintain the warranty for use in damp areas.
