Gosstandart banned the sale of cognacs “ARAME” from JSC “MAP” (Armenia) and “Pogreb Shio” from LLC “Kvaresky Pogreb” (Georgia).
Experts found that these drinks contain too little tannins – almost half the required amount. Because of this, the cognacs do not live up to their name. The suppliers of the products in Belarus were OJSC “Bakaleia Grodno” and LLC “Classic Wines” from Minsk.
Why this matters
A reduction in tannins in cognac is not just a “taste detail.” Tannins enter the drink only during aging in oak barrels. They are responsible for the color, characteristic bitterness, and structure of genuine cognac. If their concentration is below the standard (in this case, the standard is at least 0.3 g/dm³, but they measured 0.16 and 0.12 g/dm³), it means that the production process was compromised or the product was not aged properly at all.
In simpler terms, the drinks were given the appearance and taste of cognac, but they are not genuine cognac. The composition does not match what is written on the label, so the taste and effects of such alcohol may prove unpredictable.
