Gomel chemical plant optimizes raw material supply

A large-scale reconstruction of warehouse facilities has allowed the enterprise to reduce costs, eliminate raw material losses, and create new jobs. Reports belkagomel.by.

The Gomel Chemical Plant continues its course toward technical re-equipment and increasing production efficiency. One of the significant stages of this work was the implementation of the project "Reconstruction of a one-story warehouse building for the storage of potassium chloride."

Potassium chloride is the most important raw material for the production of in-demand NPK fertilizers in the granulated ammonium phosphate shop. Previously, the logistics of this component were far from ideal: the raw material was delivered from the sites of the complex mixed mineral fertilizers shop by motor transport. The transshipment and transportation of raw materials by heavy-duty BELAZ trucks across the enterprise's territory was a labor-intensive, time-consuming, and financially costly process. The plant spent 64,000 rubles monthly just on rental and transportation services.

"Delivery of potassium to the site by heavy trucks led to uneven supply of raw materials, and sometimes, for example due to weather conditions, to disruptions," commented Chief Engineer — First Deputy Director of the chemical plant Sergei Kiselyov. "Since production volumes of NPK fertilizers have grown, the question arose of automating the supply of potassium chloride to the shop."

The implementation of the new project made it possible to radically change the operating scheme. The building was successfully repurposed, and now a modern specialized potassium chloride warehouse has been organized here with a system for automatic supply of raw materials directly to production. Its capacity is 4.5 thousand tons, which guarantees the enterprise a reliable stock of raw materials for uninterrupted operation.

Thus, the enterprise has established direct unloading: potassium chloride now arrives from railway cars directly to the warehouse of the granulated ammonium phosphate shop, bypassing intermediate stages. This in turn ensures the preservation of the raw material, since the absence of unnecessary transshipments completely eliminates its losses during movement. Another plus is speed and intensity. The time for moving raw materials across the territory has significantly decreased, which has made it possible to considerably intensify production processes in the granulated ammonium phosphate shop. And finally, the logistics built thanks to the reconstruction brought an economic effect to the chemical plant, because the enterprise completely got rid of monthly costs for renting and maintaining motor transport.

The modernization also had a positive social effect: ten additional staff positions were created to ensure uninterrupted operation of the new potassium warehouse at the plant. The team was joined by qualified personnel — crane operators, process operators, and fitters.
