From dry milk to buses: a visit to Algeria resulted in concrete contracts for 2027

The Belarusian delegation returned from Algeria with multimillion-dollar projects. This is an example of how agreements at the highest level are filled with concrete economic content.

In the capital of the largest state in North Africa, a series of negotiations and high-level official meetings took place. The key areas are mechanical engineering, the agro-industrial complex, pharmaceuticals, food, and supplies of baby food.

When they warn: "Algeria will definitely surprise you" - they are telling the truth. The capital of the largest state in North Africa resembles the French Riviera, a European city and a seaside resort. During the week, it occasionally rained, and there was even a thunderstorm. But our delegation was accompanied by sunshine everywhere. And this is not just about the excellent weather.

It is called "white Algeria". And this is indeed the appearance of a dazzlingly white European megacity by the sea, combined with ancient Eastern architecture, which is truly mesmerizing.

"We can do absolutely everything that Algeria needs today (and maybe tomorrow)". This quote from the Belarusian leader shows how wide our possibilities are in this market. The negotiations between the leaders in December 2025 set priorities - Belarus considers this country a key partner in North Africa. And the trade turnover can be increased at least tenfold.

The visit of the Belarusian delegation is an opportunity to agree on the details of growth points, looking into each other's eyes. The Presidential Palace has again opened its doors to Belarusians.

Natalia Kochanova, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus:

"We are here with such a representative delegation to promote the implementation of these projects. The Algerian side is ready to work with us in all areas. This was stated by the President of Algeria. We have a lot in common, and of course, we are ready to help each other and support each other in those matters and competencies that our countries have. And if we talk about the results of this visit, then contracts worth $18 million have already been signed, which will be implemented in the near future".

Algeria is a center of attraction for strong economies of the world. Oil, gas, membership in OPEC, a convenient location by the sea, and a large port - all these are advantages of Algeria, which is impressed that Belarus comes to the country not for resources, but offers its technologies and knowledge. The governments are interested in implementing a roadmap.

Viktor Karankevich, Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus:

"We come here as friends. We come here with our technologies, which we are ready to share. We are ready to create joint ventures, implement joint projects that will be aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens. That is, creating conditions for further progressive growth. And here it's not just large industry, it's also agricultural machinery, production of passenger and cargo vehicles, quarry trucks. But here are also issues of light industry. This includes the production of fabrics, leather raw materials, production of finished products, including special products that could be in demand precisely here, in this market".

Algeria is an industrially-agrarian state, although the oil and gas sector dominates the economy. But food security is no less worrying than the growth of black gold prices.

Looking at this beauty, it's hard to imagine that the lion's share of the country's territory is the Sahara. Among the most interesting large-scale projects is the greening of the desert, in the implementation of which Belarus is ready to help.

In principle, our country can become a reliable partner in strengthening food security.

Alexander Yakovchits, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food of Belarus:

"Algeria is a strategically important country for us. Since it imports a lot of dry milk, we have already managed to sell over 20,000 tons of dry milk this year. And as part of the delegation, we have the heads of dairy plants working, and we have already managed to contract for 2027 for $18 million: both skimmed dry milk and whole dry milk".

The capital is a major port hub. Overnight, the empty port is filled with thousands of containers. This is the intersection of sea trade routes. For us, this is also a new window of opportunity.

Yevgeny Sobolevsky, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Belarus to Egypt and concurrently to Algeria:

"Africa is of interest to us from the point of view of a huge growing market where we can supply not only our competencies but also finished products. Without exception, all countries, especially Algeria, fit this definition. We have increased the dynamics of contacts recently. We communicate on an equal basis and are ready to share everything we have on an equal and friendly basis."

Our machines are needed in various fields. And Belarusians not only present but already implement projects.

Andrey Kuznetsov, the Minister of Industry of Belarus:

"We also proposed solutions for the passenger transport project, because they have a need until 2030 to capitalize on the complete renewal of the entire bus fleet. Among our competencies are grain drying complexes for preparing and storing grain. Our general directors are working on projects that we discussed today. These approaches are formalized in agreements. I think that by the end of the year we should already have some results."

Projects are being worked out in the field of pharmaceuticals, and it is possible to localize the production of Belarusian cancer drugs in Algeria. The implementation of the planned projects will give an impetus to the development of the economies of the two countries.

Alexander Starovoytov, the Deputy Minister of Health of Belarus:

"Today, in the Republic of Belarus and in Algeria, these industries are developed quite well. And just as Belarus provides its hospitals and clinics with its own preparations to meet about 80% of the demand for medicinal products, so Algeria also produces a sufficient amount of medicinal products. Therefore, we are discussing mutual exchange and cooperation on those medicinal products that are necessary for both our countries, and simplifying the registration of these products in the Republic of Belarus and in the Republic of Algeria."

Algeria is an influential player on the international stage

Algeria is an active member of the Non-Aligned Movement, the League of Arab States, and the African Union.

In a warm atmosphere, a meeting was held with the Chairman of the National Council. Algerian parliamentarians received an invitation to visit Minsk on a trip.

Aziz Nasri, Chairman of the National Council of Algeria:

"We highly appreciated Alexander Lukashenko's visit to Algeria last December. He became an impulse for developing our relations and activating cooperation. Besides the economic side there are also parliamentary relations. And if we work well together, we will get high results. We await the opening of a direct flight between our capitals."

Natalia Kocheanova, Chairperson of the Republic of National Assembly of Belarus:

"It is very important to us that we interact on international platforms where we support each other on key positions. This is above all the preservation of peace, sovereignty and independence of our countries. And regarding these sensitive issues that exist in politics, which some countries conduct towards our states."

People everywhere share one thing - the desire to strengthen independence and live peacefully on their own land. A touching conversation was observed at the museum, whose exposition shows how strong the people's will is. It is symbolic that one had to experience these emotions on the Day of Unity of the Belarusian people. The feelings of the Algerians are close to ours. Above the museum rises a majestic monument - a symbol of the people's struggle. It can actually be seen from almost any point in the city. A wreath was laid at its base by the Belarusian delegation.

The Mediterranean Sea calls with its azure expanses. Just like deep, with a horizon stretching far away, could be Belarus-Algeria cooperation.
