Employees of an Italian airport were routinely inspecting passengers' luggage and found a crocodile head in one of the suitcases. The animal is an endangered species.

The financial police in Turin determined that the owner of the luggage had arrived from Miami via Istanbul. "The reptile's head had been dried and wrapped in ordinary wrapping paper, which made it possible to bypass the security service of the country of departure," customs officers noted.

Border guards confiscated the head, and an investigation was launched against the passenger. The man is suspected of smuggling a specimen belonging to a protected species without the appropriate certificate or license.

If found guilty, the former owner of the crocodile head faces a fine of between €20,000 and €200,000 or imprisonment for six months to a year.
