Currency Market: Belarusians Shift to Ruble Deposits

tania August 27, 2026 8:58 The National Bank of Belarus has recorded a major transformation in citizens' preferences. Above all, the currency market has seen a record inflow of national currency into deposits. This was reported by the deputy chairman of the regulator's board, Andrei Kartun. As a result, the volume of household savings has surpassed the psychological threshold of 25 billion rubles.

Currency Market and the Abandonment of the Dollar

At the same time, around 70% of all deposits are now ruble-denominated. However, just a few years ago citizens preferred to keep their savings in dollars. Consequently, the population has been a net seller of foreign currency for the third year in a row. At the same time, the American currency is also losing ground in the structure of global reserves.

Decline in Demand for the Euro

In addition, the regulator is changing its approaches to the structure of external payments. Previously, the share of the European currency in settlements exceeded 20%. At the same time, today the figure is practically approaching zero. Moreover, the euro has finally ceased to enjoy its former demand among market participants.
