In Belarus, they plan to dramatically increase safety at road and railway crossings. On the country's railway crossings, a large-scale deployment of modern video analytics systems will begin, capable of automatically detecting potential threats on the tracks and promptly warning locomotive crews.

The large-scale project will be implemented on the basis of advanced technological solutions of the Republican Unitary Enterprise 'Beltelecom', in close integration with the existing technical systems of Belarusian Railway (BZhD).

How will the smart system work?

The core of the complex is based on artificial intelligence and computer vision algorithms. Special high-resolution cameras installed at the crossings will scan the track area in real time.

The system is capable of instantly recognizing:

  • Any vehicles (cars, buses, special equipment) stuck or stopped on the crossing;
  • Unauthorized persons, pedestrians, or cyclists violating the rules of being on the tracks;
  • Large animals posing a collision threat.

As soon as the automation detects a foreign object in the danger zone, the signal is instantly processed. Without human involvement, the system generates an emergency message and automatically sends it via digital train radio communication directly to the driver's cab of the approaching train. The obstacle information will reach the locomotive crew located up to 3 kilometers from the crossing, allowing them to apply emergency braking in time and prevent an accident.

The implementation of this important joint project of Belarusian Railway and communications specialists is planned for 2027. At the initial stage, innovative complexes are planned to be installed at the busiest crossings with heavy road traffic.
