Purchasing car tires abroad can lead to an unpleasant surprise at customs. Belarusian customs officers continue to explain the rules for importing goods for personal use, which many citizens mistakenly interpret too broadly.

In the official telegram channel of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Belarus, they clearly showed how limits for personal use work. Despite the modest cost, when the weight of the goods is significant, the buyer will have to pay customs fees.

As an example, the situation with purchasing a new set of car tires on wheels in Germany was considered. The purchase price amounted to 400 euros, which falls within the allowed price limit, however the total weight of the wheels reached 56 kg, which significantly exceeds permissible norms.

  • According to current EAEU legislation, goods for personal use can be imported duty-free if:
  • The value does not exceed 500 euros
  • The weight does not exceed 25 kg

In this case, the value (400 euros) does not raise any questions with customs, what cannot be said about the weight: the excess amounted to 31 kg – explained the State Customs Committee.

Besides weight restrictions, there are also quantitative ones. The import of new wheels as goods for personal use is permitted provided that the following conditions are met:

  • No more than one set per calendar year
  • Documentary proof of vehicle ownership

Since in the described situation the weight exceeds the norm, the import of the set is possible only after payment of customs
