Starting on January 1, 2026, owners of electric vehicles in Belarus will no longer benefit from a tax exemption on vehicle tax. Electric cars will now be taxed at standard rates.

This was announced by the Minister of Taxes and Fees, Dmitry Kiyko, on the TV channel STV.

When owners of electric vehicles will have to pay the tax

Individuals will receive notices of vehicle tax payment for 2026 in 2027. They will need to pay the tax by November 15, 2027.

For organizations, the obligation to pay vehicle tax for electric vehicles will already apply in 2026.

Why the exemption was cancelled

The Ministry of Taxes and Fees explained that the decision was driven by the need to secure funding for road construction. According to Dmitry Kiyko, vehicle tax is one of the targeted sources of funds for these purposes, and all vehicle owners use the roads.

The minister also noted that the current vehicle taxation system does not yet take into account the environmental characteristics of vehicles. If necessary, the tax system could be adapted in the future to address environmental issues.

Thus, from 2026 onward, general rules for calculating vehicle tax will apply to electric vehicle owners. The exact amount depends on the applicable rate and the characteristics of the vehicle.
