How much sugar is planned to be produced in Belarus from the 2026 sweet root crop harvest was announced on air by Oleg Zhidkov, chairman of the Belgospiщeprom concern, on the First Informational TV channel, reports BELTA.
Oleg Zhidkov reminded that the sugar beet harvest began already at the end of August. The harvest is quite good. According to agronomists' forecasts, it will exceed 5.5 million tonnes, which will require additional efforts to process it promptly and without losses.
"Work is being synchronized at all stages from field to enterprise. Starting from transportation, storage to delivery to processing capacities, the process must be continuous," Oleg Zhidkov noted.
Sugar plants are undergoing modernization and are currently able to process more than 40 thousand tonnes of sugar beet per day. Processing time is being reduced, related costs are being optimized, and losses from late processing periods are decreasing.
"We have already processed more than 1.8 million tonnes of sugar beet. Compared to last year, we are ahead in dynamics. We have produced more than 280 thousand tonnes of sugar. Production volumes indicate that we should obtain at least 700 thousand tonnes. This will be sufficient not only for domestic consumption by residents and processing enterprises that use sugar as raw material, but also to establish a decent export potential," Oleg Zhidkov noted.
