In Polesia, there is currently its own harvesting campaign. Only instead of potatoes and grain — cranberry, and instead of the usual fields — entire plantations of the red berry. At the production site Poleskii Zhuraviny of JSC Parokhonskoye in the Pinsk district, the harvest is being collected. This season they expect to obtain about 100 tons of cranberry. What this unusual berry harvest looks like, we show in our photo report.
The most interesting thing about such harvesting is the process itself. Here cranberries are collected in an unusual way: the plantations are specially flooded with water, and then amphibious tractors are driven over them. The equipment separates the berries from the bushes, and they float to the surface. This is all thanks to small air pockets inside the cranberry that prevent it from sinking.
Gradually the water turns into a continuous red carpet. Workers, using special pontoons, pull the berries to the edge of the plot, from where they are loaded onto trailers via a conveyor. Then the cranberries are sent for sorting, where leaves, grass, and damaged fruits are removed. After that, the berry is ready for sale or freezing.
