Simply put, a market maker is a “professional player” on the exchange who takes on the obligation to always be in the game. While an ordinary investor may wait for a suitable buyer or seller for hours or even days, a market maker is required to constantly place orders for both buying and selling specific securities. In essence, this is “insurance” for liquidity. Thanks to such participants, the market ceases to be “sleepy”: the investor gets a guarantee that they can complete a transaction at any moment, without waiting for someone else to appear on the exchange.
The launch of market makers addresses several objectives at once:
The first companies to take on this responsible role on the Belarusian Currency and Stock Exchange were:
OJSC Belagroprombank — it provides support for government bonds of issue No. 412 (in Belarusian rubles).
CJSC Aigenis — this participant is responsible for liquidity for bonds of issue No. 380 (in US dollars).
The Ministry of Finance emphasizes that this is not just a technical innovation, but a qualitative leap in the development of infrastructure.
“The emergence of market makers is the standard for modern organized trading. This is the result of long and systematic work by the Finance Ministry, the exchange, and professional market participants,” commented Deputy Finance Minister Pavel Lemekh.
The launch of market making is a signal that the Belarusian securities market is becoming more mature and convenient. For investors, this means lower risks and greater comfort when working with government bonds, making them an even more attractive instrument for preserving and growing capital.
